The Importance of Blood Donation During War
As we enter the fourth year of the full-scale conflict, the demand for blood donations remains extraordinarily high. Healthcare professionals understand the importance of having a constant supply of donor blood to save the lives of both military personnel and civilians.
This week, the team at Primary Medical Care Center No. 16 in Odesa conducted its twelfth blood donation event since the war began. About twenty donors arrived at the blood transfusion station, ready to share their strength to save others. One blood donation can save up to three lives.
“In our medical facility, a group of regular donors has formed. New participants join us each time, and we encourage our friends, family, and patients to donate blood. We are ready to donate every two months — it’s safe, it’s beneficial, and of course, it’s urgently needed by our defenders,” said the director of Primary Medical Care Center No. 16, Anna Pavlega.
Blood donation offers several benefits:
- prevention of cardiovascular diseases, thrombosis, heart attacks, and strokes;
- reduction of risks for various types of cancer, especially those linked to excess iron;
- renewal of the blood system and the body as a whole;
- regular blood donors live 3-5 years longer;
- saving the lives of others.
Currently, blood donation is a vital contribution to Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Current needs for donor blood in medical institutions in Odesa are posted on the Telegram channels “Odesa. Official” and “Donor Odesa” with support from the Department of Information and Digital Solutions of the Odessa City Council.
Since the start of the war, approximately 13,500 blood donations have been conducted with the help of the “Donor Odesa” project, saving thousands of lives!
The “Donor Odesa” project actively participates in the annual charitable initiative “Week of Good Deeds.”
